The long standing rumors appear to be true with actor Billy Dee Williams reportedly set to reprise his role as smuggler Lando Calrissian in the upcoming J.J. Abrams-directed “Star Wars: Episode IX”.
With all three of the original “Star Wars” key characters gone within the film’s continuity, Lando marks the most significant character from the original trilogy who is still alive on screen and so his appearance marks one last link to the original films in a series which has otherwise moved beyond them.
Calrissian has also barely popped up in any of the supplementary in-canon material that has been published since ‘The Force Awakens’ and so Abrams has some free reign as to how to handle the character.
Williams, aged 81, was recently seen attending the “Solo” premiere and posted photos with actor/musician Donald Glover who played the younger version of the character in that film. Williams has also reprised the character in voice roles in recent cartoons and video games.
Filming on “Star Wars: Episode IX” is about to kick off ahead of a December 20th 2019 release.
