“Verity” Opening Quadruple That Of “Digger”

Warner Bros. Pictures

Looks like the box-office prognosticators were correct – the Tom Cruise-led “Digger” is coming in under $10 million for the weekend and likely to debut in fifth place.

The Alejandro G. Iñárritu-directed film looks set to debut with just $8 million for the weekend domestically, marking the lowest opening for a film with Cruise since 2007’s “Lions for Lambs”.

It’s being absolutely trounced by the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s “Verity” which looks set to pull in four times Digger’s numbers at $32 million and claim the top spot.

In fact, on Friday alone, “Verity” pulled in nearly double the revenue “Digger” is set to get for the entire three-day weekend.

Both films have been absolutely trounced in reviews, and audiences feel the same – both movies landing a C+ CinemaScore. For “Verity,” that’s the worst score to date for a Hoover adaptation.

“Resident Evil” will hold onto second place with $12 million with a total of $124.3 million so far. “Heart of the Beast” will be third place with $11 million, a solid hold thanks to a drop of just 45% in its second weekend.

Fourth will go to the Robert Pattinson-led “Primetime” $8.2 million, a sharper drop of 56% in its second outing. Sixth will be Dreamworks’ “Forgotten Island” with $6.6 million (a fall of 49%) which is sadly looking like a bomb for the studio.

Seventh will be “Avengers Endgame: Encore” with $4.2 million – the re-release plunging 87% in its second weekend as many of the ‘Infinity Vision’ versions of the film were restricted to just one week.

Also of note, Sony’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is about to fall out of the top ten, with the title at just $2.4 million this weekend. Sony was locked in its digital release for this Tuesday.
