Bradley Cooper has signed on to play Duke, leader of the Joes, in a new and untitled “G.I. Joe” film currently in the works at Paramount Pictures.
“The Righteous Gemstones” creator Danny McBride is directing the project and co-wrote the script with Jeff Fradley and John Carcieri.
Earlier this year, Max Landis and Danny McBride were hired by the studio to pen two separate scripts for a new feature adaptation of the Hasbro toy brand. Landis’ take was rejected, and development proceeded on McBride’s version.
Despite his comedy background, McBride says it’s not a comedy but a suspense thriller set in Springfield, a town that’s secretly all part of the terrorist organisation Cobra, where Duke and a group of Joes find themselves.
Channing Tatum played Duke in the two previous “G.I. Joe” live-action films in 2009 and 2013. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mark Vahradian and Zev Foreman are producing.
At the same time as Cooper’s casting has been revealed, it has also been confirmed that plans for a “G.I. Joe” and “Transformers” crossover project have been scrapped, with that film no longer in development.
