QSSR Upscaling Comes To The Base PS5

A simplified version of the PS5 Pro’s upscaling tech is coming to regular PS5 consoles.

Sony PlayStation has announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, aka. QSSR, a new performance tier of AI upscaling that has emerged from the company’s Project Amethyst – a collaboration with AMD.

The PS5 Pro’s PSSR analyses game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional approaches. Those computational demands previously made bringing that experience to the base PS5 impossible.

The company says that while PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, which also has dedicated upscaling hardware and runs at higher resolutions, the new software-based QSSR still provides notable improvements in both image detail and stability on the base PS5.

The first two titles to use this new tech are the just-released “Marvel’s Wolverine” and last year’s “Ghost of Yōtei,” which releases its expansion and ‘Complete Edition’ version today. Both are being patched today to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option on PS5 alongside what had been its only real option to date – AMD’s FSR.

Video has been released of “Marvel’s Wolverine” showing off some of the improvements in terms of detail.
