Disney Pictures has released a new official poster for its live-action adaptation of its 1989 animated classic “The Little Mermaid”. The poster comes ahead of the full trailer drop on Monday.
Rob Marshall helms the film about Ariel (Halle Bailey), a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King).
While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula (Melissa McCarthy), which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.
The cast also includes Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian, Jacob Tremblay as the voice of Flounder, Awkwafina as the voice of Scuttle, Art Malik Sir Grimsby, Noma Dumezweni as Queen Selina and Javier Bardem as King Triton.
Bailey recently told The Face that this take on Ariel as more reflective of modern women: “When we were younger, she gave up everything for the guy. But I don’t think [that] reflects modern women today. So [now] it’s more about Ariel finding freedom for herself because of this world that she’s obsessed with.”
The live-action “The Little Mermaid” is scheduled to score a wide release in cinemas on May 26th.
