Tom Hanks is in early talks to play Geppetto in the upcoming live-action “Pinocchio” movie at Disney Pictures.
A live-action version of their 1940 animated feature, the story follows a living puppet who must prove himself worthy in order to become a real boy. Geppetto is his creator, a master toymaker as well as a widower who longs for a son. Geppetto is protective of Pinocchio, prompting the boy to set out and see the world for himself.
Paul King (“Paddington”) is directing and Chris Weitz (“Rogue One”) is producing the film. Both worked on the script with “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” playwright Jack Thorne and later “Paddington” co-writer Simon Farnaby also working on subsequent drafts.
Andrew Miano will also produce the film which is slated to have a budget of around $150 million and is slated to start next summer. The project is separate from the darker, more adult animated feature based on the property which filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is producing for Netflix.
