The cult hit Japanese video game “Lollipop Chainsaw” will be turned into a live-action feature film that also serves as a prequel.
According to Deadline, the film was just announced at the Tokyo Game Show and will be set before the events of the original game.
It is being planned out as an R-rated action comedy and being sold as not just a potential franchise launcher but a “new model for building globally recognised entertainment franchises from Asia”.
The story follows Juliet Starling, a San Romero High School cheerleader born into a legendary family of zombie hunters.
When a catastrophic zombie outbreak engulfs her school, Juliet must fight her way through the undead to save her friends, protect her family, and keep her boyfriend Nick close – even if it requires some highly unconventional arrangements.
Former ZDF Studios drama boss Robert Franke says in a statement: “We are making a film that feels unmistakably true to the spirit of Lollipop Chainsaw while standing completely on its own. Longtime fans will recognize the attitude, irreverence, and glorious excess they love, while newcomers can simply enjoy an unforgettable action-horror comedy. Our ambition is to create a film that entertains audiences everywhere, whether they’ve played the game or not.”
The title comes as both a new video game and animated series based on the franchise are about to launch.
Released in 2012, the original “Lollipop Chainsaw” has become a cult hit over the years and has sold more than 1.5 million copies worldwide. It was remastered in 2024.
