Taika Waititi Slams “Klara and the Sun” Critics

Sony Pictures

Filmmaker Taika Waititi’s “Klara and the Sun” has been savaged by critics and bombed at the box-office, the poor reviews coming out of the movie’s London festival premiere shortly before release essentially sinking its chances from the get go.

Now, Waititi has taken to Instagram to take a shot at film critics after pointing out how the movie’s 78% audience score is far more reflective than the critic’s 28% audience score and took the chance to take a shot at film critics:

“I haven’t read a review of anything aimed at me or my peers in almost 15 years. But I do listen to the people. So this Halloween, let’s spare a thought for those sad lost souls who couldn’t achieve their dreams of becoming artists, and thus became critics. The same people who also hated Jojo Rabbit. Irrelevant. Out of touch. Obsolete. In the bin.”

In the 2010’s, Waititi was a critical darling with “Boy,” “What We Do in the Shadows,” “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” and “Thor: Ragnarok” drawing excellent reviews all round and even his “Jojo Rabbit” also faired very well.

But the 2020’s saw a slide with “Thor: Love and Thunder” scoring mixed at best reviews, “Next Goal Wins” landing negative reviews, and now ‘Klara’ being outright panned.

His championing of the ‘Klara’ audience numbers rings fairly hollow considering that 78% is only 2% higher than the 76% that “Thor: Love and Thunder” received while critics were overall higher on his 2010 films than audience scores were.

“Klara and the Sun” debuted at No. 15 last weekend with just $720,000 from 880 locations, leading to Sony scaling back its theatrical footprint both domestically and overseas.
