Ahead of its 50th anniversary next year, the original “Star Wars” is set to be dubbed into Welsh for the first time.
S4C and Creative Wales are partnering with Lucasfilm and Disney on the Welsh language version of “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope”, which will be broadcast on S4C and across its platforms from Christmas Day onwards.
Actor Matthew Rhys will voice Han Solo, Osian Morgan will voice Luke Skywalker, Rhys Ifans as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Aimee-Ffion Edwards as Princess Leia, and Mark Lewis Jones as Darth Vader.
Titled “Star Wars: Gobaith Newydd, the audio version is directed by Ellyn Stern and produced by Michael Kohn.
Lucasfilm co-president Lynwen Brennan, who was born and raised in Wales, said: “Welsh speakers will finally be able to enjoy the film in our native language and my hope is that it will have the same emotional impact as if you were watching the film again for the first time.”
S4C’s chief executive Geraint Evans said: “It’s such an iconic film to so many generations of fans across the world so we’re delighted to be working with Lucasfilm and Creative Wales to turn this ambition into reality.”
