A report back in September has now been confirmed – “The Black Phone” and “How to Train Your Dragon” star Mason Thames has landed the role of Dick Grayson/Nightwing in the upcoming animated “Dynamic Duo” film at DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures.
DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran confirmed the news while speaking with Collider recently, with the exec saying Thames has long been keen on getting the role:
“We always talk about wanting volunteers and not recruits to be part of the DCU, to be part of DC Studios, and Mason always wanted to be Dick Grayson. He just did. And he came in, and auditioned the s— out of it, and was awesome. He’s a wonderful young actor, but boy, did he want this. He was just obsessed. When he came over to the DC offices, he came over with his dad at the time, and we’ve got tons of great archives and stuff in there, and wanted to take a picture of everything and with everything. He’s a fan.”
The theatrical release is said to follow the early days of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, aka the Robins, who at this point in time are orphan thieves who name themselves the ‘dynamic duo’.
A new animation studio out of New Orleans named Swaybox is handling the project, which will be told via ‘Momo Animation’ – a blend of CGI animation, practical elements of stop-motion, and live-action real-time performance.
The previous report from Jeff Sneider indicated “The Walking Dead: Dead City” and “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” actor Logan Kim would be playing Jason Todd in the film, “Little” and “black-ish” actress Marsai Martin would play Barbara Gordon, and offer were out to Chris Pine for the role of Batman and Lee Pace as the Red Hood gang leader. None of those have been confirmed.
Arthur Mintz directs “Dynamic Duo” which is set to open in cinemas on June 30th 2028.
