Singer Sabrina Carpenter is set to star and produce an untitled movie musical based on Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” which has been set up at Universal Pictures.

The original novel follows a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole to land in a fantastical and nonsensical world of talking and human-like animals.

Previous famous adaptations include the Disney animated movie in 1951 and Tim Burton’s 2010 film version that grossed over $1 billion.

“Hustlers” writer/director Lorene Scafaria will pen and direct the film, while musical producer extraordinaire Marc Platt will produce alongside Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton.

The project is said to be a passionate one for the global pop star, who approached the studio a year ago with specific ideas and a ‘lookbook’. The concept subsequently evolved, which is when the others started coming on board.

Carpenter recently earned six nominations for the 68th Annual Grammy Awards, including album of the year and best pop vocal album. Her screen credits include “The Hate U Give” and “Girl Meets World”.
