A live-action “Mary Poppins” TV series is in the works, one with no ties to the Disney version.
Indie production company Pure Fiction Television, backed by See-Saw Films (“Slow Horses,” “Heartstopper”), are behind the show that will not be a remake of the iconic 1960s film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.
Instead, the show will be an adaptation of the original eight P. L. Travers-penned “Mary Poppins” books – opening up the larger world Travers created.
That version is more “mysterious, mercurial and dangerous” than the film one, the character going on adventures that are often surreal and sometimes terrifying.
The series is being developed and produced by Tom Winchester (“Shōgun”) on behalf of the trustees of the P.L. Travers estate from whom he has optioned the rights.
Early-stage conversations are taking place with Disney to see if they might want to join, and Winchester is already approaching top-level showrunners.
