Two years ago “Fifty Shades of Grey” proved a box-office phenomenon with the film racking up an $85 million domestic opening weekend on Valentine’s Day of 2015.
Two weeks out from the opening of the sequel, prerelease tracking suggests interest in the franchise has waned. Right now estimates are it will open in the $35-40 million range in North America – less than half that of ‘Grey’.
One issue is that Valentine’s Day falls on a Tuesday this year. In any case, the film cost an economical $55 million to make so a $40+ million opening is seen as a winner at this time.
Stars Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan reprise their roles as Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey, respectively. Author E.L. James’ husband Neil Leonard penned the script and James Foley directs both this month’s “Fifty Shades Darker” and next year’s “Fifty Shades Freed” with both films having been shot back-to-back.
