Netflix is working on an animated feature set in the same universe as its recent smash hit series “The Witcher”.
Redanian Intelligence broke the story, finding a listing on the official site of the Writers Guild of America indicating that Beau DeMayo is writing a project titled “The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf”.
No story details have been revealed and It’s not clear how far along the project is, though it’s believed that the movie would be released ahead of the show’s second season which won’t hit until 2021.
Executive producer Tomek Baginski has previously hinted that “a few more interesting surprises between seasons” are in the works but wouldn’t say what those were.
The talk comes as the series is on track to be Netflix’s biggest first-season original TV series ever. According to the company, the series has been chosen to be watched by 76 million customer households in the first four weeks of release.
Henry Cavill stars as Geralt of Rivia in the series alongside Freya Allan (Ciri), Anya Chalotra (Yennefer), Jodhi May (Queen Calanthe), Bjorn Hlynur Haraldsson (Eist), Adam Levy (Mousesack), MyAnna Buring (Aretuza) and Millie Brady (Princess Renfri).
Update: Cat’s out of the bag, Netflix has now officially confirmed this story and have provided a synopsis: “The world of The Witcher expands in this anime film that explores a powerful new threat facing The Continent.”
The project hails from producers Lauren Schmidt Hissrich and Beau DeMayo, along with the Korean animation studio Studio Mir (“Voltron: Legendary Defender”).
