Appearing at the Sitges Film Festival, filmmaker Peter Jackson has offered an update on several projects he’s tied to, including new entries in the “Tintin” and “The Lord of the Rings” franchise.
Presented with the 2026 Honorary Grand Prize, Jackson attended at the same time that the Andy Serkis-directed “The Hunt for Gollum” is currently filming in New Zealand ahead of a planned December 2027 release.
It is one of two new “The Lord of the Rings” franchise films that Jackson has some involvement in, the other being “Shadow of the Past,” which is being penned by Stephen Colbert and Philippa Boyens. Asked (via Screenrant) about what he’s currently working on, Jackson responded:
“We have The Shadow of the Past, which is in the scriptwriting stage. The Hunt for Gollum is almost finished filming. I think there are about two weeks of shooting left. And we’ve also already written the script for Tintin 2, the second Tintin film. That will be the next film I make.”
Word came back in May during the Cannes Film Festival that he and his partner Fran Walsh had begun working on the script for the next “The Adventures of Tintin” film – sounds like it’s all done and ready to go.
Jackson and Spielberg famously made a pact years ago, which would see Spielberg direct and Jackson produce the first “Tintin” film (which they did in 2011), then Jackson direct and Spielberg produce the second, with a third potentially being co-directed by the pair.
It’s widely assumed a sequel would be based on “The Seven Crystal Balls”/”Prisoners of the Sun” two-parter but Jackson hasn’t confirmed which story or stories they are adapting for the work.
Reports emerged last week that “The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past” had stalled following the Paramount and Warner Bros. merger, but those were quicjly debunked.
