Marvel TV Chief Sidesteps “Young Avengers” Talk

Post-“Avengers: Endgame,” Marvel has seemingly been laying the groundwork for a potential “Young Avengers” movie with the introduction of a boatload of younger characters who could make up the team.

These include Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), Billy Maximoff (Joe Locke), America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), Eli Bradley (Elijah Richardson), Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne), and this month Tommy Maximoff (Ruaridh Mollica).

Yet there has been seemingly no actual talk of a “Young Avengers” film outside of online speculation. This week, speaking with Brandon Davis on his Main Character podcast, Marvel Television boss Brad Winderbaum was asked whether Marvel was deliberately building toward a team-up.

Winderbaum didn’t offer a straight answer, rather hinting that something was planned but the work has stalled creatively behind the scenes:

“I’ll say how it works: I get to develop a lot of cool ideas. Imagine being in my position and being a fan of stuff and being like, ‘Okay, that’s awesome, and that’s awesome, and let’s try to make it.’ So there’s a lot of stuff we’re always trying to make.

But Hollywood’s a funnel. Not everything makes it to the screen for a million reasons. And I’ve had my heart broken so many times. That’s the business. But you keep trying to push the things you love forward.

Sometimes you’re able to make ‘VisionQuest,’ you know what I mean? And sometimes there are things that sit around for a while and all of a sudden pop, and they go, and you’re like, ‘Oh my God, I can’t believe this is real.’ And sometimes you’re sitting on something great, and it takes a long time, and it hurts.”

At another point in the interview, he says the team are all fans of Young Avengers and cites the ‘Children’s Crusade’ storyline. That one follows the Young Avengers as they search for the Scarlet Witch.
