“The Lobster” and “Dogtooth” filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos indicates he may be stepping away from filmmaking after a recently quite prolific run.
The longest gap in the celebrated Greek director’s career took place after the Oscar-winning “The Favourite” in 2018. Lanthimos seemingly went away for five years to develop a number of projects.
When he came back, he ended up doing three films in the space of three years – 2023’s “Poor Things,” 2024’s “Kinds of Kindness” and last year’s “Bugonia”.
Now, speaking with the Financial Times to promote a recent photography exhibition, Lanthimos says he’s stepping away from filmmaking again and this time it could be much longer.
He says taking pictures is ‘freeing’ compared to the stress that comes with filmmaking:
“You can just walk around with a camera, it is a solitary thing, and kind of meditative in a way. You don’t have to have a concept, you don’t have to have an end goal. You don’t have to find financing.
At this point I am saying, ‘Will I make more films? I don’t know, we will see.’ I need to find again the joy in making films. I want to let it come naturally, instead of pushing myself.”
Lanthimos previously indicated last year that he’s somewhat burned out and needed to take a step back.
