Filmmaker Zach Cregger has surprisingly revealed that he won’t be involved in writing or directing capacities in the upcoming “Weapons” spin-off.
Cregger’s “Weapons” was one of the biggest hits of last year, grossing $268 million worldwide on a $38 million budget. Announced shortly after that film’s release, “Gladys” is set to serve as a prequel focusing on Oscar winner Amy Madigan’s Gladys character.
For some time now, there’s been some mild confusion over which project Cregger would film next now that his “Resident Evil” movie is done and hitting cinemas shortly.
Cregger seemed to be tossing between the “Gladys” prequel and his passion project, the sci-fi film “The Flood” which Spielberg is producing. Then he dropped out of directing “Gladys,” but was still linked to co-write the script with Zach Shields (“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”).
Speaking with Deadline, he now indicates his only involvement in “Gladys” will likely be as a producer and with a potential story credit: “Actually, Zach Shields is writing ‘Gladys.’ I was developing the story with him, but he’s writing it.”
Cregger is instead to begin shooting “The Flood” early next year. It reportedly follows a deep-space exploration team that picks up a strange, recurring signal from a remote planet and investigates – only to discover a bizarre alien artifact that begins warping reality.
“The Flood” is due to be released in cinemas on August 11th 2028, with “Gladys” slated to follow a few weeks later on September 8th 2028.
