Lilly Wachowski says she is ‘done’ with “The Matrix” franchise, but oddly enough still has a say on if it’ll go forward.
In April 2024, Warner Bros. Pictures announced that a fifth film in the franchise was in the works, and the first instalment without Lana or Lilly Wachowski involved as directors.
Both were behind the original trilogy and subsequently worked together on a number of films (“Jupiter Ascending,” “Cloud Atlas,” “Speed Racer”) and the Netflix series “Sense8” before Lilly stepped back from the series and let Lana handle the fourth film, “The Matrix Resurrections,” on her own.
That film cost $190 million to make but grossed just $37 million domestically and proved divisive amongst reviewers. Now, “The Martian” and “Project Hail Mary” screenwriter Drew Goddard is slated to write, direct and produce the next film in the series.
However, speaking with KCRW’s The Business, Wachowski says Goddard reportedly won’t move forward on the film without the blessing of the Wachowskis.
Lilly says she and Lana may still ‘stick our noses in a tiny bit’ before deciding whether to give it. Either way she’s finished her time with the property:
“Warner Bros., they wanna make another thing. They’re always gonna wanna make another thing. Personally, I don’t wanna play in that sandbox anymore. I’m kinda done.
But there may be a thing that’s happening with Drew Goddard, and he doesn’t wanna go forward unless he gets our blessing. And so, it becomes this complicated situation where, maybe we’re gonna stick our noses in a tiny bit and see how we feel, and if we wanna pass on our blessing to Drew or not. So, it could be something that’s coming down the road, but it’s still unknown.”
At the last report back in March, Goddard was still working on the script and didn’t know when it would be ready to move forward.
