After five weeks of holding the crown, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has given it back to Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” – overseas at least.
The Ancient Greek epic took the top spot at the worldwide weekend box office with $46 million ($13M domestic, $33M overseas), pushing off that other Tom Holland-Zendaya movie to second place in its sixth frame with $44.1 million ($18M domestic, $26.1M overseas).
“The Odyssey” now stands at a worldwide total of $1.627 billion in its eighth weekend and looks set to overtake the $1.67 billion haul of “Jurassic World” to become the highest-grossing movie for Universal Pictures ever in the next week or two.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” now stands at $2.4 billion at the global box office with $917.8 million domestic and $1.485 billion overseas totals through Sunday.
That film is expected to ultimately beat the “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” domestic total of $936.7 million before it ends its run, but is also likely to settle for third-highest grossing movie worldwide of all time as “Avatar” at $2.9 billion and “Avengers: Endgame” at $2.8 billion are just too far away.
Domestically, the Mark Wahlberg-led “By Any Means” opened to $7.4 million for the three-day and $9.1 million for the four-day holiday in fourth place.
In terms of returnees, “Coyote vs. Acme” fell just 29% in its second weekend with $11.3 million for the three-day and $14.5 million for the four-day. “Buddy” saw a rise of 6% with $5.7 million and $7.2 million for the three and four-day runs. On the other hand “The Dog Stars” plummeted 65% in its second weekend with $2.7 million and $3.4 million for the three and four-day hauls.
Re-releases fared well – the “Cars” 20th anniversary re-release opened in sixth place did $6.1 million for the three-day and $7.6 million for the four-day, the biggest numbers for a Pixar re-release in over a decade. The “Akira” re-release opened in tenth place with $2.7 million and $3.2 million for the three and four day, its biggest re-release haul by far.
