“Foundation” Showrunner Talks S3 Plans

Apple TV and Skydance Studios just wrapped up the second season of the acclaimed sci-fi series “Foundation” with a shocking finale.

The cliffhanger has begged the question as to when is it coming back, and the answer… isn’t so simple. At present, Apple TV and Skydance Studios have not yet committed to producing a third season.

The ongoing WGA and SAG strikes are also delaying any plans for more at present, despite the show’s success. Nonetheless, showrunner David S. Goyer has already been planning a third season.

Speaking with The Wrap about the finale, Goyer remains “very optimistic” another will be ordered says “Apple and Skydance are extremely happy with our Season 2 performance that the audience has unquestionably built”.

Talking about where the third season can go, Goyer promises it only gets crazier:

“It’s bonkers what happens in Season 3. I remember reading online last week people’s reactions to 209 going, ‘Oh my God, how can they show survive’ and then thinking oh there are so many more things that happen in the next episode, and then there’s even crazier things that happen in Season 3. I’m really excited. I hope to get the word on Season 3 as soon as the strike is over.”

He was also asked if he had plotted out the entire series arc of “Foundation” to which he says they have and are ready to adjust their plans depending upon how many seasons they get :

We have through Season 4 fairly rigorously plotted out, and then if we can get beyond Season 4, we’ve got some big tentpoles that we know we’re riding towards and kind of 5, 6, 7 and 8 I know where most of the characters end and whether that be in Season 4 or Season 6, we’ll move it down or up the scale depending on how many seasons we get.”

Whilst the first season scored softly positive reviews, critical notices for the second have proven much better. Both seasons are now available on the Apple TV+ service.
