Hot off its debut at the “Rick and Morty” panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the first look clip has been released for Adult Swim, Telecom, and Sola Entertainment’s “Rick and Morty: The Anime” spin-off series.
The series revolves around the adventures of the members of the Smith household, predominantly mad scientist and samurai Rick Sanchez, and his grandchildren – 14-year-old Morty Smith and 17-year-old Summer Smith.
The spin-off first arrived in the form of five anime shorts released back in 2021. They were successful enough to spawn a full new spin-off series set to premiere later this year.
Director Takashi Sano says in a statement at the end of the trailer:
“As the director, I would like to assure you that I’m also a huge fan of the original Rick and Morty. I believe there are many Rick and Morty fans all over the world, and I’m truly honored to be chosen to create a new Rick and Morty story out of all of them.
But with that honor comes a lot of pressure because the original is just so well made. What I’ve tried to accomplish in these ten episodes is to take all of my favorite parts of watching Rick and Morty, compress them down to extract their essence, and then add a unique Japanese twist.
I’d like you to enjoy Rick and Morty’s adventures as they’re whisked through time and space, tangled up in all sorts of chaos. And after all ten episodes I think you’ll find yourself in a peculiar state of mind. And that state, I believe, best reflects the feelings I get watching Rick and Morty. I hope you enjoy the new series. Please do check it out!”
The voice cast includes Yōhei Tadano as Rick Sanchez, Keisuke Chiba as Morty Smith, Manabu Muraji as Jerry Smith, Akiha Matsui as Summer Smith, and Jun Irie as Beth Smith.
Further specifics about the show are under wraps, and it’s unknown if the anime will crossover with the main series at some point.
