“Yellowstone” To End In December

Paramount Network

It’s official – “Yellowstone” is coming to an end. Following months of speculation and reports, Paramount Network has finally offered an official update on the future of its flagship series.

Paramount Network says its Kevin Costner-led series will return for the second part of its fifth and now final season in November, with that run to air the series finale in December.

The show will be replaced immediately by a new Yellowstone-branded sequel series hailing from franchise creator Taylor Sheridan.

The new series has widely been rumoured to be a starring vehicle for Matthew McConaughey and plenty of the current “Yellowstone” supporting cast. Still, the network isn’t confirming any casting or other creative details about the sequel other than saying the “Dutton story continues” and the new series “picks up where Yellowstone leaves off”.

The release from Paramount does not discuss how that planned rollout could be impacted by the WGA strike, which is expected to run for months.

Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, issued a statement saying:

“Yellowstone has been the cornerstone on which we have launched an entire universe of global hits – from “1883” to “Tulsa King” – and I am confident our Yellowstone sequel will be another big hit, thanks to the brilliant creative mind of Taylor Sheridan and our incredible casts who bring these shows to life.”

The end of “Yellowstone” comes years earlier than anyone would’ve expected last year. By ending now, the new sequel series won’t fall under old agreements and so will have its streaming home on Paramount+ rather than Peacock.

The news comes as Vanity Fair has done a lengthy feature piece on Sheridan’s new series “Special Ops: Lionness” starring Zoe Saldana and Nicole Kidman. That series premieres later this year.
