“Super Mario” Movie Set For Major Launch

Universal Pictures

Universal Pictures, Illumination and Nintendo’s highly anticipated “The Super Mario Bros Movie” just popped up on the earliest box-office tracking sites ahead of its Easter weekend release.

According to the site, the animated film is set for a domestic haul of at least $85-90 million from Wednesday through Sunday – and that’s expected to be the lowest estimate we’ll here for the title with projections likely to be revised upwards the closer we get.

The accuracy of tracking figures, especially for large openings, is still unclear at present post-pandemic and sources suggest a triple-digit opening over the five-day period is very possible – especially if the early reaction from those who see it matches anticipation levels.

The best opening ever for an Easter weekend release was “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” which was a juggernaut with a jaw-dropping $181 million over three days.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is unsurprisingly tracking the strongest with boy and girls under 12 equally and guys under 25, but could pull in older audiences who grew up with the game and are now parents themselves.

Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic direct the film which has a voice cast that includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

“The Super Mario Bros Movie” opens Wednesday, April 5th worldwide, check out a new clip from the film below.
