Flanagan Wants To Do New “Jaws,” “Jurassic”

Universal Pictures

With his “Carrie” mini-series now on streaming and the trailer for his “The Exorcist: Martyrs” having just launched, filmmaker Mike Flanagan has revealed some other dream projects of his.

In an Ask Me Anything (AMA) on Reddit, Flanagan said he’s much more open to doing existing large franchises and sequels now than he was after making those two projects.

In fact, he says two potential dream jobs for him would be tackling franchises that began under Steven Spielberg’s tutelage, but have since been watered down by some lacklustre sequels:

“I spent a lot of my career thinking I wouldn’t do franchises or sequels, and – whoops – but I really love getting to play in a world I know and respect and adore, and put my own spin on it.

Honestly, I wish to hell I could make a JAWS movie. Another example where no one will EVER get close to the original, but there is a ton of room for improvement on the sequels. A JURASSIC movie could be a blast too, I’d want to go really scary with it. A true dinosaur horror film would be a blast.”

Spielberg’s original “Jaws” remains one of the most landmark films of all time. Three years later, French filmmaker Jeannot Szwarc (“Somewhere in Time,” “Supergirl”) helmed “Jaws 2” which was not remotely in the league of the first film.

Over time (and much like Peter Hyams’ “2010” or Richard Franklin’s “Psycho II”), it has found a fanbase of its own despite its flaws and is seen as miles better than the third and fourth films, which are often labelled some of the worst movies ever made.
