Filmmaker Danny Boyle has confirmed that movement has stalled on the Cillian Murphy-led third entry in the “28 Years Later” franchise.
At the London Film Festival this week to promote “Ink” (via Deadline), Boyle participated in a Q&A and said that while he hopes the film gets made, financing still needs to be set. As a result, the movie is “on the back burner at the moment”.
Another complication is that Boyle’s collaborator on the film, writer/producer Alex Garland, has been busy with his film adaptation of the video game “Elden Ring” for A24. Boyle says: “Alex has been off doing his own film, which is a huge project”.
Though filming is over, that movie is still not due out until March 2028, and Garland will spend almost all of next year tied up in post-production.
Boyle also has his Antarctica-set film, penned by “Trainspotting” writer John Hodge, keeping him occupied even as it faces similar financing issues and other difficulties as the next “28 Years Later”.
That South Pole project follows 2018’s competing solo treks by American athlete Colin O’Brady and British explorer Louis Rudd to see who could cross Antarctica first.
