Bill Nighy, Rosemarie DeWitt Join “Starfleet Academy”

British national treasure Bill Nighy and veteran actress Rosemarie DeWitt (“Untamed,” “Smile 2”) have been revealed to be new additions to the cast of the second and final season of “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy”.

The casting was revealed along with some first-look photos during the Star Trek Universe panel at New York Comic Con on Saturday, along with the announcement that the new season will premiere in March 2027.

Series star Holly Hunter was in attendance along with Sandro Rosta, Bella Shepard, Karim Diané, Robert Picardo and co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau.

In the new run, Nighy will play Nahla’s estranged father, Nyk Ake. DeWitt will play Tarima’s mother, Laytha Sadal, the First Lady of Betazed. Both actors are appearing in guest star capacities.

The second season follows the cadets into their second year aboard the USS Athena. There, their ideals are put to the test as they navigate budding rivalries, shaky diplomatic negotiations, a fiercely competitive schoolwide tournament, and the arrival of a mysterious new cadet whose existence has consequences for all.

The new run follows a first season that notably did fairly poorly ratings wise. This and the fifth season of “Strange New Worlds” are expected to close out the Kurtzman-era of “Star Trek” ahead of Skydance rebooting the property with a new film.
