The first teaser trailer has been released from Mike Flanagan’s ‘The Exorcist: Martyrs” starring Scarlett Johansson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, John Leguizamo, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane and Sasha Calle.
The project serves as a full reboot of the franchise with “Doctor Sleep” director and “Midnight Mass” creator Flanagan essentially given carte blanche to creatively take the franchise wherever he wanted.
The story begins thirteen years ago, New York City detective Julie Miller (Johansson) ended the terror reign of satanic serial killer Father Sunday. The case made her a hero, and she has thrown herself into her work ever since.
Now a new killer scrawls her name in an altar boy’s blood on the walls of a church crypt, dragging her back into the darkness she believed she had buried with him.
Aided by former prison chaplain Father William (Chiwetel Ejiofor), who heard Father Sunday’s final confession, and sharp rookie detective Gina Restrepo (Sasha Calle), Detective Miller will discover a filament linking a lineage of serial killers, from H.H. Holmes to the Zodiac, that could corrupt everything, and everyone, she loves with an evil that goes well beyond the mortal.
Many of Flanagan’s regulars from his limited series works like “The Haunting of Hill House” and “Fall of the House of Usher” are set to co-star, including Rahul Kohli, Carla Gugino, Hamish Linklater, Gil Bellows, Carl Lumbly, Robert Longstreet, Matt Biedel, Samantha Sloyan, Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr., and Benjamin Pajak.
Flanagan has previously said he’s aiming to make the scariest movie he’s made. “The Exorcist: Martyrs” will open in cinemas in March next year while Flanagan’s reinvention of “Carrie” has just been released on Prime Video.
“The Exorcist: Martyrs” is only in theaters March 12th.
