Universal Pictures has released the official trailer for DreamWorks Animation’s new coming-of-age fantasy comedy feature “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” which opens in cinemas on June 30th.
Sweet, awkward 16-year-old Ruby Gillman is desperate to fit in at Oceanside High, but she mostly just feels invisible whilst her over-protective supermom has forbade Ruby from ever getting in the water.
When she breaks that rule, Ruby discovers that she is a direct descendant of the warrior Kraken queens and is destined to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother, the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas.
The Kraken are sworn to protect the oceans of the world against the vain, power-hungry mermaids who have been battling with the Kraken for eons.
There’s one major, and immediate, problem with that: The school’s beautiful, popular new girl, Chelsea just happens to be a mermaid. Ruby will ultimately need to embrace who she is and go big to protect those she loves most.
Oscar nominee Kirk DeMicco and Faryn Pearl helm the film which boasts the voices of Lana Condor as Ruby, Jane Fonda as the Kraken Queen, Toni Collette as Ruby’s mum, Annie Murphy as Chelsea, Colman Domingo as Ruby’s dad, E Sam Richardson as Ruby’s uncle, Blue Chapman as Ruby’s brother.
Also onboard are Will Forte, Nicole Byer, Liza Koshy, Jaboukie Young-White, Ramona Young, Eduardo Franco and Echo Kellum.
