Following a screening of the new “Evil Dead Rise” film at the SXSW film festival on Wednesday evening, a post-screening Q&A reportedly turned into something of a shouting match.
Footage of the altercation has spread across social media as a young heckler in a balcony seat shouts out “this movie f—ing sucks,” chucks popcorn and heads for the exit over a chorus of boos from the audience.
Actor and producer Bruce Campbell is heard yelling at the heckler: “What are you doing here? Get the f— out of here” to which the audience responded in cheers. Fellow producers Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert were also on hand with the latter saying: “I don’t get it. He waited all the way through the credits” to laughter from everyone.
The lively premiere has yielded very good reviews so far for what is the fifth installment in the long-running horror franchise, Variety saying there’s “an abundance of bloody mayhem that increases exponentially until a hugely satisfying and splatterific climax.”
Lee Cronin takes over as director on the project in which a road-weary woman pays an overdue visit to her older sister who is raising three kids on her own in a cramped Los Angeles apartment.
The sisters’ reunion is cut short by the discovery of a mysterious book deep in the bowels of the building, giving rise to flesh-possessing demons and thrusting Beth into a primal battle for survival as she is faced with the most nightmarish version of motherhood imaginable.
Morgan Davies, Gabrielle Echols, and Neil Fisher co-star. “Evil Dead Rise” opens in cinemas on April 24th.
