Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez showed off a work-in-progress screening of his new Ben Affleck-led sci-fi thriller “Hypnotic” at this year’s SXSW film festival.
Affleck stars as a detective who becomes entangled in a mystery involving his missing daughter and a secret government program, while investigating a string of impossible high-end heists. Alice Braga, JD Pardo, Jeff Fahey, Jackie Earle Haley and William Fichtner co-star.
Out doing a little bit of early promotion for the film, the famed “Desperado,” “Spy Kids” and “Alita: Battle Angel” writer-director had time to share his thoughts on the future of one of his franchises – “Machete”.
The original 2010 film starred Danny Trejo as the bike-riding, blade-brandishing ladies man wreaking havoc and violence on his path toward revenge. Robert DeNiro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, and Don Johnson co-starred.
A critical and commercial success, it led to a less well-regarded 2013 sequel “Machete Kills” which contained a faux trailer for a third film – “Machete Kills Again… In Space”.
Speaking to Deadline, Rodriguez says a potential “Machete In Space” film is a possibility in the near future but as of now it’s mostly just the wish of existing franchise fans. He explains that “you can’t give them [audiences] enough… we have to do one” as he keeps being asked about it. Check out his video explanation below.
