A new report indicates that filmmaker Jon Watts has emerged as the choice to direct the first film in the new “Star Wars” film trilogy at Lucasfilm.
The report comes from scooper DanielRPK and refers to the Simon Kinberg-penned trilogy which will be set after the events of the sequel trilogy and its final entry, 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker”.
Back on Monday, a report arose that a director has been selected for the gig, but it didn’t say who. That report claimed production is picking up steam fast and could begin filming as early as next year.
Watts most famously directed the first three Tom Holland-led “Spider-Man” movies, starting with “Spider-Man: Homecoming” through to “Spider-Man: No Way Home”.
He’s also had experience with Star Wars, serving as showrunner and helming some episodes of the “Skeleton Crew” TV series on the Disney+ service.
There has been no confirmation from either Lucasfilm or the trades that the films have moved beyond the development stage, let alone secured a director.
The next “Star Wars” film due in cinemas, beyond February’s 50th anniversary re-release, is Shawn Levy’s “Star Wars: Starfighter” hitting in May next year.
