With “Avengers: Endgame – Encore” in cinemas again this weekend, and currently charting for a $26 million three-day haul, the film’s directors Joe and Anthony Russo have been answering questions from both press and fans.
Many have been about how the re-release’s new material ties into the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday” along with anything they could tease about the new film.
While they don’t give much away, Joe Russo tells CBR that one thing they are doing is bringing back the serious warrior Thor:
“It’s fascinating how malleable he is playing that role, and the range that he has. He has a wide array of directors with different tastes and different tones that have interpreted the character. We have a specific point of view on that character. That’s what we’re going to carry forward, the Infinity War Thor.
We love that sort of warrior version of him, that warrior who has lost everything, who is seeking meaning through battle. Will he ever find it or not? That is the journey he will go on against the greatest foe he’s ever met. As you can see from the trailers, it’s going to be a hell of a fight.”
The news has already been met with a positive reception after “Thor: Love and Thunder” pushed the character too far towards the comedic, resulting in decidedly mixed reviews.
Last year’s early teaser for “Avengers: Doomsday” teased the tonal change and showed Thor raising his adopted daughter Love and praying to his late father Odin.
Meanwhile, Anthony Russo, participating in a Q&A, revealed to Games Radar that despite all the reports, there are some names in the film that have yet to be announced:
“The cast is so large, and we’ve announced some of the cast, and we haven’t announced some of the cast. Joe and I are still very deep in the process of finishing Doomsday. We always say we’re not done with a movie until they pry it out of our cold, dead hands.”
“Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 18th 2026.
