Netflix has announced plans to produce the documentary feature “Yellow Door,” which traces the search for Oscar-winning “Parasite,” “Snowpiercer and “The Host” director Bong Joon-ho’s unreleased first short film.
Bong’s first film “Looking for Paradise,” a 22-minute stop-motion animated film short made for the cinephile club Yellow Door, was screened to ten people at Yonsei University in Seoul in 1992. It has never been seen since.
Lee Hyuk-rae (“Sewing Sisters”) directs the new documentary, which will look into Bong’s creative drives and origins while piecing together the film from the recollections of the few witnesses who saw it.
In the process, the film will also examine an era when young cinephiles were emerging in South Korea, which has become a powerhouse of audio-visual content in the past decade.
Broccoli Pictures is producing with Netflix distributing in 2023.
Bong made several other short films before making his debut feature in 2000 with “Barking Dogs Never Bite”. His second feature, 2003’s “Memories of Murder,” was his breakout and launched him on the world stage.
