To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original “28 Days Later,” the film’s director Danny Boyle and breakout star Cillian Murphy spoke with the NME about the famed zombie horror film and what’s next for it.

The original was released in 2002 and was then followed up by the still solid if less well regarded “28 Weeks Later” in 2007. Murphy says of the franchise that he “loves the idea, and it’s very appealing” and adds that another entry is always on his mind.

Boye meanwhile revealed that the original’s screenplay writer and filmmaker in his own right, Alex Garland, has already written the script for a third entry titled “28 Months Later”. Boyle says the project has a ‘lovely idea’ at its core, and adds:

“I’d be very tempted [to direct it]. It feels like a very good time actually. It’s funny, I hadn’t thought about it until you just said it and I remembered Bang, this script! which is again set in England, very much about England.

One of the things that’s happening in the business at the moment is it has to be a big reason for you to go to the cinema. It’s hard for companies distributing films and for cinema chains to show films, they’re struggling to get people into the cinema unless it’s something like Top Gun: Maverick or a Marvel. But a third part would get people in, if it was half-decent.”

That would suggest if another one’s coming, a theatrical release would be mandated by those involved. Actress Imogen Poots, who appeared in the second film, has also expressed interest in returning in the past.
