“Digger” Gets Dumped From Many Screens

Warner Bros. Pictures

The Tom Cruise-led dark comedy “Digger” is being pushed out of a bunch of cinemas.

Exhibitor Relations reports that the Alejandro G. Iñárritu-directed satire is losing a little over 2,500 screens this weekend, dropping from 3,321 last weekend to just 786.

That’s a fall of about 76%, one of the largest screen-count drops for a major studio release after just two weeks.

The film has grossed $38.2 million to date from a budget of around $170 million, along with a further $100 million spent on marketing.

The numbers began poorly with an $8 million domestic and $12 million overseas debut in its first weekend, and then saw a domestic drop of 60% in its second weekend. Attempts by filmmakers and actors to promote the film on social media had no impact.

Reports now have the film potentially losing the studio a massive $250 million, making it one of the most costly flops of all time alongside the likes of “John Carter” and “The Marvels”.
