Apple’s much-anticipated, Martin Scorsese-directed “Killers of the Flower Moon” is out of the season’s awards race. The project, which had hoped to make an early or late 2022 bow, will instead be released in the originally intended 2023 calendar year.

Filming on the $200 million-budgeted drama wrapped in September last year, but Scorsese is known for his arduous editing process, and the film simply won’t be ready in time. Instead, it is being rumored to eye a major 2023 festival debut at Cannes or Venice.

Part of the reason for the shift was that the movie was originally intended to be a 2023 release until the Oscar slapping incident scuttled Apple’s plans for its Will Smith-led slavery drama “Emancipation” to be its big awards contender for 2022.

They hoped the Leonardo DiCaprio and Jesse Plemons-led ‘Moon’ would be its substitute, but that won’t happen now. Apple still has some awards hopefuls on hand including “Cha Cha Real Smooth,” “Luck,” “Causeway,” “The Greatest Beer Run Ever,” and “Raymond & Ray”. As for “Emancipation” itself, it’s status remains in limbo.
