Pop singer Ariana Grande and actress Cynthia Erivo will respectively portray Glinda and Elphaba in the upcoming film adaptation of the Tony-winning musical “Wicked” at Universal Pictures.
The stars announced their castings in Instagram posts on Thursday evening. Jon M. Chu (“In the Heights”) will helm the project and has been attached since February.
A prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” the musical tells the story of everything leading up to Dorothy’s arrival. and starred Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth as Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (the Good Witch of the South).
The film adaptation has been in the works for over a decade. Stephen Schwartz is adapting the screenplay with Winnie Holzman. Marc Platt will produce.
