DreamWorks Animation’s “The Croods: A New Age” pulled in $1.85 million on the Wednesday before the Thanksgiving weekend.
At present only 2,650 theaters are open right now in the United States out of national footprint of 5,500 with “The Croods” sequel taking up 2,211 of the active ones. Early hopes are the film will pull in $10 million over the five days.
The domestic exhibition market remains broken as Good Friday is one of the busiest box-office days of the year and no-one is clear what will happen this year. The film is also launching in seven key overseas markets including China where the results are expected to impress.
The first film had an opening day of $11.6 million several years ago and a three-day of $43.6 million. It closed out with a final domestic of $187.1 million domestic and $587.2 million worldwide.
“The Croods: A New Age” is expected to hit PVOD outlets around Christmas.
