NASA has made it official, they are partnering with Tom Cruise to shoot a film, at least in part, aboard the National Space Station.
NASA administrator Jim Bridentsine tweeted on Tuesday: “NASA is excited to work with @TomCruise on a film aboard the @Space_Station. We need popular media to inspire a new generation of engineers and scientists to make @NASA’s ambitious plans a reality.”
Word broke yesterday that Cruise and Elon Musk’s SpaceX were in the early stages of teaming up with NASA for an action-adventure feature that would be shot in outer space.
Said film would mark the first narrative feature to be shot in space, and is an original work rather than a sequel to an existing franchise such as one of the upcoming “Mission: Impossible” sequels.
How the 57-year-old Cruise will do this is unclear, though his desire to do a film in space has been around for a long time as he and James Cameron played with the idea years ago but never quite got it to work.
