Regal Cinemas Closing All U.S. Locations

Regal Cinemas, which operates 543 locations across the United States, has announced that they will be shutting down all of its movie cinemas starting Tuesday.

The move follows in the wake of a White House news conference with U.S. President Donald Trump telling Americans to avoid social gatherings of more than ten people; to steer clear of eating and drinking at bars, restaurants and food courts; and warning that the crisis could last until July or August.

Prior to the weekend, all the main chains like AMC, Regal, Cineplex, Arclight and Alamo Drafthouse imposed limits on sales as a safety precaution.

With so many movie theaters closing, Universal announced Monday that it will make its movies available on home entertainment on the same day as the films’ global theatrical releases starting with “Trolls World Tour” and will also make films currently in theaters available on-demand starting Friday, March 20th.

Whether other studios will follow suit isn’t clear but one person pushing for it is “Birds of Prey” director Cathy Yan who tweeted the Universal announcement and added about her Warners film: “I would not be opposed to putting Birds of Prey on VOD earlier.”
