“Sonic” Gets Redesigned Following Backlash

Sonic Gets Redesigned Following Backlash

“Kill it with fire” seemed to be one of the more common reactions to the unveiling of the “Sonic The Hedgehog” movie trailer the other day by Paramount Pictures.

The film adaptation of the famed SEGA video game series has long been under scrutiny ever since the studio began marketing the movie all whilst keeping the titular character’s face hidden. Even then, the changes to the design that they did show – from the sprinter-sized massive thighs to the fur color alterations of the arms and torso – have been met with a lot of criticism.

Cue the trailer and new poster releases this week where his face was finally revealed and ridicule seemed to be most common reaction. The character’s signature massive eyes were replaced by something much smaller, wider apart and odder, while his mouth and human teeth seemed strange.

While the film looked generic, it was the bad character design that got everyone talking – so much so that those behind the film have not only heard them loud-and-clear but are actively changing it up. Director Jeff Fowler took to Twitter today to reveal they plan to redesign Sonic after overwhelming backlash. He says:

“Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear… you aren’t happy with the design & you want changes. It’s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be… #sonicmovie #gottafixfast.”

In the wake of the release, fans all over the Internet made their own changes to the design to make it look much closer to the original game model and the results often proved far more appealing than what we saw in the trailer. You can see one example from Reddit below along with the original trailer.

The live-action adventure comedy about the brash bright blue hedgehog follows his misadventures as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). The pair team to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination.
