Ahead of the Disney/Fox merger becoming locked in place, Josh Boone’s “The New Mutants” was supposed to undergo extensive reshoots to add new characters and drastically alter its tone.
Those reshoots haven’t happened yet and now indications keep mounting that rather than proceed with then, Fox’s new owners Disney will instead just release the film in its current state on its Disney+ streaming service.
A new report in Vanity Fair says the film will be a “likely casualty” of the merger and “its moderate budget, younger cast, and smaller spectacle make it the perfect title to send directly to consumers.”
In addition, a source for SHH has claimed the reshoot talk was to incorporate “Logan” star Dafne Keen’s X-23 character, while rumours about Mister Sinister being included were completely false and the recent talk of a lesbian relationship between Wolfsbane and Mirage in the film is only talk because in the film all they actually do is a quick kiss during a game of Spin the Bottle.
For now, “The New Mutants” remains on Fox’s release schedule. That schedule is expected to be overhauled shortly after Disney completes its takeover of Fox later this week.
