NBC has announced plans for “Gatsby,” a police procedural TV spin on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” according to Deadline.
With the original novel entering the public domain in 2021, it sounds like essentially the plan is to do with this what “Elementary” and “Watson” did with the Sherlock Holmes books – turn the property into a modern day episodic procedural drama.
In this take, both Jay Gatsby and Nick Carroway are contemporary cops – with Carroway being genderswapped. The series comes from writers and executive producers Jake Coburn and Jason Tracey (“Elementary”).
Here, Jay Gatsby is a devilishly charming investigator and detective “with a con-man’s gift for reading human behavior”.
Decorated New York State Police Det. Nicole ‘Nicky’ Carraway was “born to be a cop but dreams of becoming a writer”.
How much DNA this series will share with the novel is unclear but speculation is already. Could the Valley of Ashes be a nightclub? The green light be a recurring motif in a murder, and how will Daisy fit into all this.
There presently is no timetable for the series so it’s not clear when it will go into production.
