Considered one of the great ‘lost’ projects, Stanley Kubrick’s “Napoleon” sadly never came to be due to a lack of financing.
Yet the screenplay still exists and Steven Spielberg revealed earlier this year that he planned to turn the project into a mini-series for HBO.
Today comes the real surprise though, it turns out that “Moulin Rouge” and “The Great Gatsby” filmmaker Baz Luhrmann is being courted to direct the high-profile project.
The choice is surprising – you couldn’t get two filmmakers any more disparate than Luhrmann and Kubrick, aside from both usually taking a long time assembling their film in post-production.
If he signs onboard though, Luhrmann likely won’t have that luxury as the mini-series will move forward fast. It also has to get out ahead of a rival Napoleon biopic at Warners which Rupert Sanders is attached to direct.
