Zach Cregger’s “Resident Evil” topped the box-office this weekend, pulling in a major $108.3 million worldwide – $60 million domestic/$48.3 million overseas.
That easily tops the $70 million worldwide start of “Weapons” last year to be his biggest debut to date.
The opening also beat “Scream 7” for the second-best start for a horror film worldwide this year, behind only “Backrooms” with $118 million. Overseas only, “Resident Evil” topped “Backrooms” which debuted with $36.6 million in those markets.
The worldwide opening has also beaten the worldwide final gross of the original 2002 “Resident Evil” ($103M) and the more recent 2021 failed reboot “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” ($42M).
“Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” in 2016 holds the highest total gross for the franchise with $312 million – half of which came from China in what’s now considered an anomaly.
Domestically, the highest-grossing film has been “Resident Evil: Afterlife” at a $60.1 million total – this film’s domestic opening weekend could beat that when the final Sunday numbers are in.
