Maya Hawke Joins “Magic: The Gathering” Film

Netflix

Maya Hawke (“Stranger Things,” “Inside Out 2”) has signed on for filmmaker Matt Johnson’s live-action film adaptation of the table-based trading card game “Magic: The Gathering” at Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment.

Specifics of her role are under wraps. Matt Johnson (“BlackBerry,” “Operation Avalanche”) is directing the project and will co-write it with Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald.

First introduced in 1993 by Wizards of the Coast, the role-playing fantasy game became the forerunner of the trading card game movement and a schoolyard staple in the 1990s.

Involving wizards, creatures, weapons and spells that have various levels of strength, certain cards were quite rare, which made them valuable commodities on the collector’s market. The game has reportedly reached 50 million players.

Hasbro has a “Magic: The Gathering” TV series set up at Netflix with former “Star Trek: Picard” and current “VisionQuest” showrunner Terry Matalas. A previous attempt to adapt the property into a film was made a decade ago but it never got out of early development.

Hawke wll be seen in cinemas later this month with “The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping” and has the Netflix series “God Of The Woods” on the way.
