“Gran Turismo” Film Targets $16M Start

Sony Pictures

The final results of this weekend’s box-office isn’t going to be clear until Monday morning as this Sunday’s National Cinema Day event is expected to draw huge crowds, albeit for discounted ticket prices.

That means it’s not certain where films will land and which ones will draw people to them. One of the expected big draws is the sole big new release this week – the film adaptation of the PlayStation video game franchise “Gran Turismo”.

Critics softly like the film at 60% (5.9/10) on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences are loving it with a 98% (4.7/10) score on the same outlet along with an ‘A’ CinemaScore from exit polls.

Now, estimates are Sony is eyeing a $16 million opening weekend for the film. That total includes the $5.3 million the film made in sneak previews over the past two weekends and on the night before.

The movie had a budget of just $60 million, and has already pulled in $22 million from select overseas markets which means it could make it to profit theatrically so long as it sustains momentum.

If it hits $16 million it doesn’t guarantee the film will top the weekend, but gives it a strong chance to take on “Barbie” and “Blue Beetle” – the latter is expected to drop around 58% to $10 million in its second weekend – which would actually be one of the smallest drops for a DC film in recent times.

“Oppenheimer” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” are expected to fight it out for fourth and fifth place.
