A few years ago, back in 2019, “Stargate SG-1” series co-creator Brad Wright was asked by MGM to write a pilot for a new series in the franchise.
Said series was to follow a new gate team years later within the existing canon of the franchise, which includes shows like SG-1, “Stargate Atlantis” and “Stargate Universe”.
Sadly though, Wright has offered an update on the long-in-development reboot, and from the sounds of it the project is dead.
Asked by a fan for an update on the prospective series, Wright explained via Twitter:
“You won’t hear news from me. MGM did hire me to write a pilot for a new show, but that was just before COVID hit. Timing couldn’t have been much worse. All the players have changed in the interim, so it’s likely destined to gather dust. Would’ve been fun, though.”
Whilst that iteration is dead, Wright says it’s inevitable we’ll see more of the franchise at some point:
“MGM/Amazon will make another Stargate. It may just take some time for them to decide what they want to do. But they own it. Not me. I believe the franchise should return with or without me. And either way, I look forward to it.”
Amazon completed its acquisition of MGM earlier this year and thus will largely depend on Amazon’s desire to resurrect the franchise whose most recent instalment was the prequel web series “Stargate Origins” in 2018.
“Stargate SG-1” is currently available on Amazon Prime and Netflix.
