Early estimates from Comscore are in with overall domestic box office revenue in 2021 to hit around $4.4 billion by year’s end.
That would represent around double that of 2020’s haul which sank to a 40-year low. Last year the total sat at about $2.2 billion, with many cinemas spending months shuttered and very few high-profile movies released.
Even with the improvement, numbers are still 61% down from 2019 which hit a massive $11.39 billion thanks to the help of Disney juggernauts like “Avengers: Endgame” and “The Lion King”. While superhero films and some franchise titles like Bond and Fast & Furious scored well this year, most other films struggled – especially those targeting adult audiences.
A return to normalcy wasn’t expected in 2021, but the hope is 2022 will see audiences eager to return to the big screen – pending any possible release date reshuffles.
